Notes on placing, cleaning and maintenance of custom fitted ear impressions

Placing:

What is the easier and proper way for the patient to put the impression in his ear? Turn off or tone down the device. Initially place in the ear the mould of your ear canal (it is the longest and thinnest part of the mould). After that using gentle twists place the rest of the impression in the ear. Try to fit it closely to the upper curves of the pinna. If you experience difficulties with placing the pushing the mould in you can rub some Vaseline on it for easier grip on both surfaces. You can also help yourself by making slight opening movements with your mouth.

Cleaning and maintenance of the ear impression:

First you need to carefully separate the mould from the device and then you can deal with the cleaning. There are several options for cleaning it:

Cleaning with a swab immersed in alcohol (pharmaceutical).
Washing it with lukewarm water – dip the mould and the tubule in a glass with soapy water and leave it for at least 10 minutes. IMPORTANT! The canal and the tubule of the mould should be insufflated with a special pump so that no wet traces remain on the mould
Cleaning with special antibacterial wipes that prevent from infection and inflammation of the ear. Easy to use and practical for traveling.
A cleaning spray for moulds
Cleaning foam that removes stains even from hard to reach places of the mould
Deep cleaning tablets –dissolved in water they form a solution that removes greasiness accumulated on the mould. The mould should be immersed in the solution for at least 15 minutes.
If the tubules are filled with ear wax then they should be cleaned with special brushes.

The products listed above can be purchased from specialized stores for hearing aids and otoplasty. If the tubule is soaked you should blow it dry with a special pump for insufflations and drying of moulds. If the tubule shows signs of induration or color change this is a sign that it must be replaced.
